What is menopause?
Menopause occurs naturally when a woman stops ovulating and having a monthly period, due to a lack of the reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone. In general, a woman is considered to be menopausal when she hasn’t had a period for at least one year. However, symptoms and changes may begin much earlier.
Prior to menopause, women may experience a number of symptoms, including hot flashes, vaginal dryness, hair loss from the scalp, increased hair growth on the face, trouble concentrating, mood swings, trouble sleeping and night sweats. In addition, arm and leg strength can suffer. Dr. Pamela Mondorf encourages women with symptoms to make an appointment for an evaluation for hormone therapy.
Hot flashes create a sudden feeling of warmth in the body, which are especially intense in the face, neck and chest. These flashes can cause sweating, and if your body loses too much heat, you may end up feeling chills. Hot flashes are the most common symptom of menopause, and they can variety and in severity and duration. Some women have a few per week, while others experience several flashes an hour. If your hot flashes are particularly troublesome, there are treatments that can help you feel like yourself again.*
